Hello! I have been a little MIA when it comes to The Heart Ability… life happens right? My husband and I had a baby girl earlier this year, Maddie Jane.
The Heart Ability was started as a way to share the lessons learned from those with extra abilities – inspired by my brother, Aaron. The vision of The Heart Ability is “Through connection we can overcome the label of disability and unleash our true abilities”. Little did I know how much more this vision would come to mean to me on my journey of parenthood.
Maddie Jane was born on March 9, 2020. Within the first 24 hours of her beautiful life we would learn that she did not pass her newborn hearing screening. We were told with much certainty to not worry about this as it was likely fluid, that this was all very “normal” (insert giggles trying to understand what normal even means).
On April 27, 2020 after several hours of testing we were told that Maddie Jane had profound sensorineural hearing loss in both of her ears.
4 weeks ago today we learned this diagnosis.
As we embark on this journey with her, I can’t help but wait for the moment she hears my favorite 4 letter word, love.
To my Maddie Jane,
I LOVE you.
I LOVE your smile.
I LOVE your personality.
I LOVE the way you giggle when our eyes lock.
I LOVE that you are a fierce warrior at 10 weeks of age.
I LOVE the ways you have changed every piece of my world.
I LOVE that you have already taught me how to listen with my heart.
I LOVE that without a single doubt I know your heart hears mine.
We learned this in the midst of a pandemic, with one parent allowed in the room, behind masks…None of that matters when your heart hears mine.
Love, Your Mama
And to the incredible hearing loss community that has already rallied around this little love, we can’t properly thank you for the hope you have given us.
